Abstract: In May 2020, wafer foundry leader TSMC announced that it will spend US$5 billion to build a 120nm advanced process fab in Arizona, USA, with a capacity of 5,2 wafers per month in the first phase, which is expected to be mass-produced in 2024. Last year, construction of the fab began. However, the lack of local semiconductor talents has also brought great challenges to TSMC.
In May 2020, wafer foundry leader TSMC announced that it will spend US$5 billion to build a 120nm advanced process fab in Arizona, USA, with a capacity of 5,2 wafers per month in the first phase, which is expected to be mass-produced in 2024. Last year, construction of the fab began. However, the lack of local semiconductor talents has also brought great challenges to TSMC.
Recently, TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou said in a statement at the Brookings Institution, a US think tank, that the cost of TSMC to build a factory in the United States has increased by 50% compared with that in Taiwan, and the United States is also facing the problem of lack of semiconductor manufacturing talents.
The key reason is that the manufacturing industry in the United States has been shrinking in recent years, especially the lack of semiconductor manufacturing talents, coupled with the fact that there are even fewer local technicians willing to work overtime and shifts, which is a big problem for TSMC's US fabs that need to recruit thousands of employees.
In this regard, TSMC began to recruit in the United States last year, and the previous news showed that the first batch of engineers recruited locally had come to TSMC Radio South 18 for relevant training. The latest news shows that TSMC is also recruiting relevant technicians in Taiwan who can be stationed in the Arizona fab.
According to reports, in terms of the qualification requirements for recruitment, you can apply if you have a high school vocational graduation or above, and those with semiconductor industry experience are preferred, and those without experience are acceptable. However, because it is necessary to work in an all-English environment, a TOEIC test score of 800 out of 990 or more is required.
Relevant reports emphasize that TSMC's operators stationed in the Arizona fab include machine operation, product inspection, and equipment abnormalities. After applying, you need to work in TSMC's factories in places including Bamboo, Zhongke or Nanke, and then work in the Fab in Arizona before the end of December to meet the company's needs, for at least 12 years. For the time the technician is stationed in Arizona, the company will provide accommodation, local and homeward transportation subsidies.
